Swarm | Oil Painting Bag | Lilac Blooms

This bag began as someone else’s painting. Constructed from a reclaimed oil painting canvas sourced from a European market, the Lilac Blooms carries the quiet history of an unknown hand.  Loose, confident brushwork depicting a generous bouquet of lilac blossoms spilling from a grey-blue vessel, rendered in deep mauve, dusty rose and slate green against a warm ivory ground.

The canvas wraps the bag entirely, so the composition shifts as you move around it. The reverse reveals a different passage from the same painting.  A still life of yellow fruit alongside a blue-and-white decorative bowl, the artist’s signature visible in the lower left. At the base, further fragments of the original scene emerge. Each panel is a different moment from the same story.

The canvas has been cut, pieced, and sewn into a structured tote form, with a woven stripe textile binding at the top, raw edges and visible stitching left intentional — evidence of the work, not a flaw. Tan leather handles are riveted at the top with adjustable buckle hardware. The interior is lined in natural cotton with a single patch pocket, finished with a red Swarm wax seal, Leslie Oschmann’s mark.
