Swarm | Altered Perspective Painting | Asters & Marigolds

A signed oil painting, work of an unknown hand bearing the signature Cory Obernsen, has been transformed through the addition of three-dimensional wool embroidery, stitched directly onto the painted canvas surface. Where the original artist rendered flowers in oil, Leslie Oschmann has returned to the same blooms with needle and wool, building them up from the surface in dense, tactile clusters of purple aster and golden marigold. The painted flowers behind become shadow and memory. The embroidered flowers in front become something you want to touch.

The result sits somewhere between painting, textile, and sculpture, an altered perspective on what a found object can become. The original canvas, aged and warm, shows its history. The wool is vivid and present. Together, they occupy the same surface across what feels like two different lifetimes.
