Eilmar stands on a white plinth with her chin lifted and her gaze turned upward, as though something just above has caught her attention. Her face is sculpted and aged to a warm, crackled cream, brushed with darker tones along the brow and cheeks. She has large, glossy dark eyes, a speckled muzzle and a small pink lip. Her tall ears are lined in charcoal cloth, edged with pale stitched binding and backed with dark brown fur.

She is dressed in Eva's Sunday fabrics. A close-fitting tea-stained bonnet sits over the back of her head, traced with dark feather stitching and tied beneath the chin with a length of cream lace. Her pinafore dress is cut in blue-and-white ticking stripe, gathered at a frayed bodice edge and fastened at the back with a single dark button. The hem is banded in cream and finished with zigzag stitching. Under the pinafore she wears long sleeves and stockings in dusky rose, edged with lace at the ankle, and long, pointed charcoal shoes, one tied at the ankle with cream tape.

Each Hip Hip Decay creature is one of a kind, handmade and named by the artist.

Behind The Brand

Hip Hip Decay is the work of Ballarat artist Suzanne McRae, who trained in ceramics at the University of Ballarat before spending years in costume and fashion, running her own shops and sewing historical corsetry and gowns for clients in Australia and overseas. Eventually she came back to clay, bringing her textile knowledge with her, and began building figurative sculptures from the materials she had always collected: stained brocades from mid-1800s dresses, old mother-of-pearl buttons, and faded fringing salvaged from Victorian armchairs. She is an inveterate hunter of forgotten things, happiest searching flea markets, French brocantes, attics and sheds for treasures with a past.

The result is a cast of creatures unlike anything else. Suzanne is drawn to the sentiment and haunting quality of memory, and to beautiful objects that have grown decrepit with time. She sees her animals as a bridge between human and creature, past and present, waking life and dream, recalling the ornaments earlier generations treasured, which now seem curious and have outlasted the people who loved them. Stained and frayed fabrics, cracked surfaces, loose threads and bright, watchful eyes give each one the feeling of a time capsule from a great-grandmother's dining room. Every piece is singular, and every one is given its own name.

Eva's Sunday has been a proud stockist of Hip Hip Decay since we opened our first Fitzroy store in 2016, and Suzanne's creatures have been part of our shops ever since, now in both Fitzroy and Beechworth. Her love of historical dress and well-worn cloth has always felt close to our own way of thinking about clothing, made to be kept, worn and loved over time. Today that connection runs deeper still, with many of her creatures dressed in fabrics from the Eva's Sunday collection: small, theatrical characters carrying a piece of our wardrobe into a world entirely their own.
